Dr. Goutam Dutta is an Emeritus Faculty Member at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), where he served as a full-time faculty member for 24 years. He was previously a faculty member at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK (1996–97), and has served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois, USA (2001), and HEC Paris (2011). He has also been an International Visitor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2004) and Loughborough University, UK (2018).
Prior to joining academia, Dr. Dutta worked at Tata Steel for 11 years in project engineering, information technology (IT), and the General Manager (Operations) Office. At IIMA, he served as Chairperson of the Production and Quantitative Methods Area, the Research and Publications Committee (2007–10), and the Doctoral Programme (2020–22). During his tenure as Chairperson of the Agri-Business Management Programme (2010–13), IIMA was ranked the world’s No. 1 institution in the field for the first time.
Dr. Dutta served on the selection panel for the Prime Minister of India’s Trophy for identifying the country’s best steel plant (2015–16) and was a founding member of the Indian Academic Board of the Project Management Institute (PMI), USA (2009–13).
Dr. Dutta has conducted executive education programmes, provided consultancy, and developed teaching cases for numerous leading Indian and international organisations. He has trained more than 3,700 executives in project management, revenue management, dynamic pricing, and emerging leadership programmes. In addition to India, he has delivered invited lectures and taught students and executives in the USA, the UK, France, China, Nepal, Oman, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Canada, and Romania. He has been invited as a keynote and plenary speaker at numerous national and international conferences and has visited universities across India and 17 other countries.
Dr. Dutta has a keen interest in promoting a project management culture in India and has worked with the Governments of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Tripura to develop and deliver programmes.
The work undertaken by Dr. Dutta’s team on energy modelling at Tata Steel resulted in savings of US$73 million, for which Tata Steel became the joint winner of the prestigious Franz Edelman Award presented by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), USA, in 1994. Tata Steel was the first and remains the only Asian company to receive this honour. Dr. Dutta was recognised as an Edelman Laureate by INFORMS in 2009. He also received First Prize in the IFORS Operational Research for Development Prize Competition in 1993, becoming the first recipient from India. Dr. Dutta is currently a member of the Franz Edelman Award Selection Committee, INFORMS, and served as a judge for the competition in 2015. He is also working to institutionalise a similar prize competition in India through IIMA.
Dr. Dutta’s doctoral dissertation at Northwestern University in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (1991–96), funded by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), USA, and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), led to the development of planning software that was copyrighted and licensed by Northwestern University. This work was selected as one of the four finalists for the EURO Excellence in Practice Award in Iceland in 2006.
Dr. Dutta served as Vice President, President-Elect, and President of the Operational Research Society of India (ORSI) between 2012 and 2019. He was elected a Fellow of ORSI in 2017 and was recognised as a Distinguished Educator in 2018. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and, since 2024, has been a Senior Member of INFORMS. He chaired two international jury panels for the IFORS Operational Research for Developing Countries Prize Contest in 1999 and 2002 and served as a jury member in 1996.
Dr. Dutta serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Revenue Management (USA), the Journal of the Operational Research Society (UK), and OPSEARCH (India). He is also a former Associate Editor of OMEGA, Information Technology and Operations Management, and the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics. He has published 52 papers in leading international journals, including Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (MSOM), Journal of the Operational Research Society, Decision Support Systems, Computers & Industrial Engineering, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, International Journal of Revenue Management, Journal of Emerging Market Finance, INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics, and the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management.
